The Pipettes
The Pipettes @ Komedia, Brighton
Date: 26th November 2004
Support: The Really Really Metro Cities, Daze One

It is certainly a star-studded evening at the Komedia tonight with members of the Electric Soft Parade, The Love Gods and Los Albertos in attendance. The first band, Daze One, look awfully young, yet manage to control and entertain a fairly rowdy crowd. They have a sound a little like (the Beta Band) and it verges on being a wall of sound at times. The main point made this evening is that Daze One have huge potential, the potential to be epic, poetic and poignant. They appear to be enjoying themselves and have an intense musical innocence; this gives them the edge over the second support band that just seem to be a little jaded and just performing.

The Really, Really Metro Cities begin their set with a very White Stripes-y sounding number. They have a lot of attitude but somehow fail to back it up, perhaps because it seems like an act. The young lady support vocalist should be handed the lead as she has a very beautiful voice and looks remarkably like Lulu! Unfortunately the Really, Really Metro Cities are just really really average.

The Pipettes are a ramshackle mix of people including members of the Electric Soft Parade (Ah!), they have a full live band and are fronted by three lovely girls who sport matching outfits and matching dance moves. The strange mix of musicians makes me want to liken them to The Commitments, but the musical style is much, much different. They combine twee indie-pop with 1950’s American prom night chic. They play short, bouncy pop songs and encourage you to dance along, and most of the audience do! The Pipettes are Rrriot-girl punk for 12 year olds. There is no politics and no Feminism. It is just inspirational and fun, fun, fun. The best songs this evening are ‘Judy’ and ‘Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me’, although the entire set is equally entertaining. If you see this band, and you definitely should, make sure you plan a place to go and dance afterwards because I doubt you’ll want to stop moving once The Pipettes get finished with you!
