At 9:30 on this December Saturday night, Goldie Lookin' Chain took over the stage in the Carling Academy. They opened with ‘Your Misses is a nutter’. A song which was apparently once dedicated to David Beckham at a Wales vs. England pre match do. They played a lot of new bits and pieces including a version of Nelly “Fruitado’s” Man eater which they enthusiastically re titled Nan eater. The set continued much like this, with the lads exchanging lyrics for laughs over some big fat beats.
One major surprise was the vast variety of different gig going species who turned up for the show. At the back there were the slightly older, jeans and suit jacket type, laughing hysterically at the naughty words. At the front were people who might usually spend their Saturday nights bouncing to this type of beat, and who when prompted would throw their hands in the air (It was as if they just didn’t care). There were devoted fans who knew every word, couldn’t keep still and covered everyone in lager and dotted around were various, rude boys, scenesters and metal heads. I even saw what looked like a ten year old boy running back from the front of the stage. He might have belonged to one of the GLC WAG’s.
With a stage show consisting solely of 8 fellers in leisurewear rapping to a backing tape, GLC must find it easy to get around. They must also miss out on the fun and games of lengthy sound checks and monitor feedback… It may be for this reason that they put so much energy into their actual time on stage. GLC’s shows are a top place to start a party. F*****g safe as f**k.
