Uninspiring both musically and lyrically it’s hard to imagine anyone getting their legwarmers and matching fingerless gloves in a twist over R.I.D’s new single ‘Turn It Up’. Were they not affiliates of cult comedy heroes The Mighty Boosh, you have to wonder whether this single would have even seen the light of day.
Sue Denim and Dee Plume show plenty of spiky energy here but there’s a lack of subtlety and lightness of touch that makes ‘Turn It Up’ little more than a pedestrian exercise in eighties electro-pop worship. Consequently and rather disappointingly this single ends up sounding like a rather hashed number from Elastica’s “The Menace” or perhaps an awkward attempt by Siouxsie and the Banshees at post-punk influenced electro pop. Its limp guitars and squelchy synths sound horribly dated and Sneaker Pimps man Chris Corner’s production does little to raise the overall standard of this track.
The hard hearted would say this single should be called ‘Turn It Off’ instead of ‘Turn It Up’ but you’d never catch Glasswerk resorting to such below the belt tactics. Let’s hope the girls discover their mojo on forthcoming debut album “Get Rid” scheduled for release on July 3rd. For more information you can visit: http://www.robotsindisguise.co.uk
