Going back about a couple of months ago my little cousin came over to stay with us. I remembered giving him Techno and Dance CD’s when he was a kid, but short of Dreadlocks he had turned into a fully fledged Rasta. He begged me to find at least one good Reggae night for a fortnight until I managed to find an absolutely blinding club in Angel called the Electrowerks. One amazing night later has led to my collection becoming filled with gems from Reggae greats from yesteryear. To my surprise when in the next load of reviews Ashley Beedle’s Warbox Reggae mix fell through the door.
It is soo accessible as it kicks in with classics and modern collaborations with samples placed and mixed into what seems to me as a real mix tape of the message of Reggae could be. Flowing like honey dripping from the sound system and without being bombasted by rich basslines you are drenched in rich vocal molasses and soft smooth rhythm and beat that gently sweeps you along. Beedle knows his reggae and more than anything knows how to make a damn fine job of mixing it into a smooth and unrelentingly good album.
From Dub to Chill, and from Kingston to Notting Hill this Album has landed on my soul and seems to lift it out of the gloom of this long winter. I cannot recommend this CD highly enough. Catch him on ashleybeedle.co.uk to see where he will jump to next. Then before you try and blag how much you know about Reggae at this years Notting Hill carnival to pull some fit girl with a tiny skirt and no shame, why not let Ashley Beedle educate you properly. You might have some fun in the process.
